Alexis Levine has just graduated from high school and intends to join the army as soon as she turns eighteen. Her dream is to become a sniper, just like her often absent father. During routine weapons practice, she meets Mark Steel, the head of a small team of agents who work for a mysterious organisation. He needs someone with outstanding skills to help his squad destroy seven psychotic psychics. With her father overseas on a mission, she is the next best choice.
Still reeling from the knowledge that psychics actually exist, Lexi agrees to become a temporary member of their team. From the first moment that she meets Reece Garrett, she is instantly drawn to him. He is strong, sexy and charismatic and unfortunately thinks of her as little more than a child.
Agent Garrett and his team have a secret that few people are aware of. They are shape shifters who transform into ravenous beasts with every full moon. The upside of being shifters is that they possess a natural resistance to mind control, which makes them the perfect team to hunt the psychics. But Reece soon learns that some instincts are impossible for even him to deny. Caught in a mind trap that he can't escape from, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to the newest member of the team.

Seven Psychics (Shifter Squad Book 1) eBook J.C. Diem Reviews
So, in the very beginning, I get the sense that Levine girl here is some kind of awesome marksman taught be the best, in turn is the best. She gets recruited by a special government force for her skills. She's 17 (almost 18)! So what she has more than 5 firearms and know how to shoot them? Did you know there are competitions revolving around this? Even if she WAS the best, she would have to be recruited and sent through special training and evaluation.
Next move, she's got the hots for a guy who is obviously not returning the affection. That's all I have there. Their feelings are never said aloud, with exception of Reece's rejection. Even in the end, we are left with a cliffhanger.
The villains are pretty awesome, even though it's way unrealistic for even coincidence. Seven deadly sins indeed. The insanity makes no sense, but I'm not insane.
The sex? There are two sex scenes. Both times, someone is under compulsion. Disappointment coming from this gal.... grrrr.
Anywho, the story sucked me in after about 25%, and I'm ready for the next installment.
The concept is interesting, and keeps some tension, but I keep getting thrown out of the story because of the missing details. This girl grew up around guns, with specialized training and practice, and she NEVER cleans them. Every time she shoots, and is finished, it is like the guns in a video game - they disappear from the story, until it is time for her to shoot again. When writing a fantasy story, the real details are part of the hook that keeps it 'real' for me.
Amended - She finally cleans the sniper rifle almost half-way through the book, and again later in the book as a distraction technique. The book takes place over about a month of time, and she cleans her weapon - used often for training as well as intent, twice. I did finish the book, but probably won't buy further with this series.
Ok - here's the thing. I actually liked this book pretty well and it got me interested in the series. Over the next couple of books, I got more and more into the series... until it all fell apart around book 6.
Basically, events in the series start to stall, the so-called "Hero" becomes a TOTAL jerk all of the time, and instead of ever having to make up for his terrible behavior to both Lexie and the squad, Diem takes a total cop-out and goes with "mind control" even though IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO THE STORY at the time AND there was much pleading among reviewers and facebook fans to NOT do a cop-out and to have Reece actually having to work to make up for his transgressions. Despite BOOKS of him being totally awful to Lexie, even before the mind-control BS, it takes nothing more than a chapter for everyone to be like 'ok, we're cool' and Lexie to totally be back in love with him.
If I had known that's where these books were going to go and that Diem was going to totally cop-out like that (despite being very responsive to Facebook pleas, reassuring her fans that that's totally NOT what was going to happen and that Reece was definitely not just going to get off lightly), I would not have wasted my money on the earlier books. It was incredibly unsatisfying, and honestly kind of insulting to the hardcore fans who she flat out lied to.
I can definitely recommend reading the vampire series, which is WAY more satisfying and actually makes sense, as well as having a hero that's actually worthwhile. If you want to check out this book because it's free, well I can say it's a pretty good read and the next few books will get better and better before they start to get kind of frustratingly boring as plot progression grinds to a halt and then incredibly unsatisfying as Diem forgoes working through any kind of actual redemption for Reece.
The main character is physically overpowered by a man she has a crush on. Although she expresses that she had no choice but to submit because of his supernaturally enhanced strength, the author portrays her as enjoying it. Also, the rapist is in his 20s and Lexie is raped on her 18th birthday, technicality making it legal, but she really is still a child. I am writing this review because I would have liked to known that this book contained this damaging "but she really wanted it" victim blaming scene. I would have chosen not to read it. I had to put down the book when it happened because it seemed unlikely that the author was going to deal with this topic in an intelligent way moving forward.
